May 1, 2005 20:40 - GALACTICA Story Editor David Weddle on Creating a Darker Version of STAR TREK

From Trek Web comes the following bit of news:

Here are excerpts of a brief interview with David Weddle, one of the story editors for the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA remake and former writer on STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE, in which talks about his work on DS9 and GALACTICA.

Question : In STAR TREK, Gene Roddenberry created a utopian Federation where they had abolished war, hunger, poverty, and even money. In DEEP SPACE NINE, they started exploring some of STAR TREK's darker terrain, including "Section 31," a covert organization aimed at protecting the Federation's interests, even though in practice they committed acts which were counter to the Federation philosophy (something almost unthinkable in the context of the 1960s series.) Weren't the writers ceding that the Federation was no longer "perfect", with "Section 31" mirroring contemporary organizations opearting within today's flawed, imperfect political systems? Weren't they making Federation society resemble a bit more like our own?

Weddle : Yes, we were trying to say that the Federation, as perfect as it seemed, had to resort to unsavory tactics and work black bag operations to keep their world safe and pristine. Brad and I wrote the first Section 31 script, "Inquisition," and it was perhaps the best DS9 episode that we wrote. The writers at DS9, starting with Ira Behr, and including Ron Moore and Rene Echevarria were pushing constantly to make the STAR TREK universe darker and filled with shades of gray. They achieved great things despite incredible aesthetic restrictions that Rick Berman enforced on the franchise.

At BATTLESTAR we are pushing way beyond that....

May 2, 2005 16:41 - New Season Lineup of Battlestar Galactica

NewsDay is reporting that the next season of Galactica will be split between a fall and spring showing, with ten episodes each:

Sci Fi will show second season of 'Galactica' soon
Wednesday, April 27, 2005
By Diane Werts
NEWSDAY
Hoping to strike while interest in Battlestar Galactica is still hot, Sci Fi Channel will start the hit revival's second season in what feels like record time. Ten fresh episodes will start in mid-July, on the heels of the January-to-April first season of 13 hours. (Another 10 episodes are being shot for winter.)

Its Friday lineup-mates, Stargate Atlantis and a revamped Stargate SG-1, will return then, too - the latter with Ben Browder and Claudia Black, much loved from their Farscape days, along with Beau Bridges and Louis Gossett Jr. For its part, Atlantis welcomes former X-Files icon Mitch Pileggi and North Shore hunk Jason Momoa.

Our thanks to Battlestar Blog for the news.

May 2, 2005 16:44 - WINNER: Dradis 99+1 Word BSG Writing Contest

Reality of a Viper Pilot
by Dean (aka Chunx)

Time to go down to the tubes and get into a viper,
The techs have armed and fueled it up and cleaned it with a wiper
Now I'm shot out into space to fight another Cylon,
To blast them into bits of steel, fibreglass, and nylon.
And when my guns are empty and my viper's low on fuel,
It's time to land and stretch my legs, then grab a bowl of gruel.
So when you get those viper wings and think of guts and glory,
It's just a boring circle which is told within this story.
So say we all!

May 3, 2005 10:06 - Jamie Bamber Interview At Gateworld

Gateworld.net has just posted up an interview in their newly revamped Galactica section of their website.

Jamie Bamber from Gateworld

Photos by Frank Ockenfels and Alan Zenuk, and are the property of The SCI FI Channel.

As Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama, actor Jamie Bamber has become a leading man for science fiction's newest hit -- the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Born in London, 32-year-old Bamber has also appeared in "Band of Brothers," "The Scarlet Pimpernel," and the Horatio Hornblower series.

GateWorld caught up with Bamber at Collectormania 7, held in Buckinghamshire in the U.K. in April. In this interview, the actor talks about working with his fellow cast members, Lee's displaced role on the Galactica, and the predicament in which he finds himself in the show's upcoming second season. Beware of spoilers through the Season One finale, "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 2."

GW: As Apollo you've had some very intense scenes this year on Battlestar Galactica. Which of your work are you proudest of?

JB: I think I like the stuff I have to do with Starbuck in the twelfth episode.

Apollo's relationship with Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) is filled with romantic conflict. From "Colonial Day."GW: The argument?

JB: Yeah -- well, there's something about it. It's sort of an explosion of jealousy that is a complete surprise to him because I don't think he's ... he's not fully aware of what he feels. There's something quite like a gut reaction that really was exciting to play. It was a surprise to me.

GW: So did you know beforehand that that scene would be coming?

JB: Yeah. When you read the script you know that something's coming, but you don't know quite how it's going to play out until the day. And it's always fun working with Katee [Sackhoff, "Kara Thrace" ] -- she's a good actress.

GW: Apollo seems to draw inspiration from Adama and from President Roslin, from their leadership; and yet he's always ready to challenge their authority. Do you see him as a natural leader or as someone who wants to fall in line but who can't find someone to line up behind?

JB: I think he's his own man. I think he's a natural leader, but I don't think he's realised that yet. We are exploring it.

Spoilers: You Can't Go Home Again
Summary: Lee is challenged by Tigh for his willingness to go to any length to find Kara.

Author's Note: Inspired by the poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas-a poem about fighting for life with everything in you and one of my favorite poems. I rewatched "You Can't Go Home Again" and I was struck by Lee's anguish over her loss and his rage at Tigh-pretty amazing stuff. :D

Rage. Anguish. Despair. All cross my mind.

He wants to leave her behind. I can't let him. I have to keep searching.

I challenge him and he hits a nerve. He knows I love her and he has gotten too close. I grab his collar. I want to kill him. I want to rage against him because I've lost her and I can't face it.

I have to keep searching for her no matter what it takes. If she's dead, I don't know what I'll do but I can't face that right now.

Right now, it's rage that fuels me.

Is he a Cylon?

From the Official Messageboard over at SciFi channel, comes this interesting rumor about our every cheerful, always ready to plot jumps at the drop of a hat and ever faithful officer. Is he too good to be true? Inquiring minds want to know. A Gaeta model? There are points to be taken on both sides.

Read the thread here and make up your own mind. You'll either be right in your theory or wrong, but we'll all know in July.

Just as the scramble order, her launch and form up with her wingman was all a blur. She was thrown into the soup, almost lost her leader. Banking hard to port then hard over starboard, a Cylon cut her off got behind her leader.

Later, she couldn't remember because it happened so fast.

She got her first combat kill.

May 5, 2005 10:25 - Great BSG Videos Found Here

Via Justine at the Tahmoh Penikett blog linked to this video and it is a must watch! I just downloaded it and watched. It is sooooo good. Don't miss it. It just pumps you up so much for the show. Great music. Great images. I highly recommend it:

Title: We Are Now Free (5/1/05)
Song: We Are Now Free by Hans Zimmer
Size: 17,279kb zipped (wmv format)
Notes: After re-watching Gladiator recently I remember how jubilant yet mournful this song was. It also reminded me so much of the BSG score that I kept going back to it in thinking of a song to make an overarching piece. This video was me basically asking 'what price freedom' in the BSG verse. Full of challenges, victories, defeats, and tragedies through individual character's eyes and their interactions.

My thanks to the Unofficial Battlestar Blog for this nice break in my day.

You can find this video to download at: Hidden Elysium which also has a nice Helo/Boomer video as well.

May 5, 2005 13:25 - New BSG reviews

Special thanks to the Unofficial Battlestar Blog who always has great news to share, another source of review and commentary about our favorite series, Battlestar Galactica from the Star Trek quadrant:

As Star Trek comes to a close, many out there are moving on to the new greatest fandom: Battlestar Galactica! One such person is Jamahl Epsicokhan over at Star Trek Hypertext. He has started a new section of BSG reviews. He brings a welcome critical perspective and a rational reviewing voice.

So, here we are. As Enterprise winds down, I find myself scrambling to launch a new section of this site, for the new Battlestar Galactica series. My original plan was that I wasn't going to make any decisions or write any reviews until after Enterprise was over. Obviously, that plan has changed, for a few reasons.

First of all, I've enjoyed the first season of Battlestar a great deal. The quality of the series was enough to make me decide that it was going to be my new reviewing project in lieu of new Trek. Plus, its subject matter and episodic structure (along with serialized elements) made it a good fit for my reviewing format. (Don't worry, TNG is still on tap, but probably not until late summer, as I've previously indicated.)

But the main reason this is being launched right now is scheduling. Since I think season one deserves more than a capsule-retrospective treatment, I thought it would be a good idea to review the episodes as season one reruns on Sci Fi. I'm currently synced up with the rerun schedule, so as the episodes re-air, you'll hopefully get a new review for each rerun that same week. Then, when season two starts in July, I'll theoretically be caught up and ready to review new episodes.

The format for Battlestar reviews will be more or less the same as my previous reviews. I've found there's plenty to talk about on this series.

Go here to check out the reviews!

Kara walked away from the crowd surrounding Caroline Adama. Lee was nowhere to be found, neither was his father. She finally found them. All she had to do was follow the sound of their raised voices.

Lee was furious, "It's your fault! You're the one that pushed him to fly!"

Kara hoped he wouldn't take this conversation too far.

"It was an accident, Lee!"

"An accident that killed my brother! An accident that never would have happened if you'd been a father, and opened your eyes!"

`No Lee, don't play that card.' Kara thought, as she watched from a distance.

Kara peered cautiously into the locker room. She had a flight lesson in a half hour. She needed to get into her flight suit, but she'd just pulled a prank on Ticker and she knew the other student would be looking for payback.

Frankly, the students' practical jokes were getting out of hand, but no one wanted to cry `uncle' first. There was pride involved.

Moving to her locker, she quickly changed. Grabbing her helmet, she found it was filled with Aquarion slugs.

Lee, she fumed. Only he knew of her revulsion to the oversized creatures. I'm gonna kill him!

*Please note: no actual slugs were harmed during the writing of this drabble.

May 9, 2005 16:35 - BSG: Closed Captioning Transcriptions

BATTLESTAR CLOSED CAPTIONED

I believe for those of us who don't need Closed Captioning, this falls under the heading of "Oh good grief!" followed by bemused laughter. This is different. The Unofficial Battlestar Blog has given us the news that Battlestar Galactica has been transcribed from the closed captioning of the episode, "You Can't Go Home Again" that was posted in this forum.

Previously, on
battlestar galactica...
zak failed basic flight
and I should have flunked him,
but I didn't.
The bottom line is
that I killed him.
Walk out of this cabin
while you still can.
( Helo )
I don't get it,
how does a military-coded signal
end up coming from in here ?
( Laughing )...

Well, you get the idea. This falls into the realm of "We're not sure what we think of this, but here it is because we're Battlestar fans and we're in re-run." It is quite different.....

May 10, 2005 13:49 - OT: Google Junkies Take Note

My tech-buddie, Rob, forwarded this to me because I use Google for so much and I couldn't resist sharing it:
Over the weekend, Google went down for 15 minutes or so. In some ways, it's hard to believe that's even newsworthy if you consider it in the context of the dot-com heyday, when some big sites went down for hours, in some cases even days. Maybe a 15-minute outage at Google just goes to show how dependent we all have become on the search giant, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. Have you tried Yahoo lately?

I couldn't resist even though this has nothing to do with Battlestar Galactica unless they're using Google to search for Earth. Maybe, this is why they haven't found us yet!

This group is dedicated to fan-fiction, discussion, fan-art and spoilers. So, if you are ready to sail on the good ship "KaraLee", and want the more adult sexier trip, then you’re in the right place!

May 11, 2005 17:08 - Is Battlestar Gallactica the Best Science Fiction Series Ever?

Is Battlestar the best? The Truth According to Mark - SciFi blogging says a resounding NO!

Enough of politics for a while. Let's look at a question that really matters to people - it Battlestar Gallactica the best science fiction series ever? No, for reasons that I will explain later. I do think that it is the best science fiction series currently in production, but that isn't saying anywhere near as much.

At it's heart, Battlestar Gallactica is a re-tread of a 1970s Star Wars rip-off. It featured the same motion-capture cameras that Star Wars used so people could get their spacebattle fix while waiting for The Empire Strikes Back to come out.

Caroline looked out of the window. She saw two officers walking up to the front door. She left the room and went to the door.

She recognized one of the officers immediately. "Todd?"

"Caroline, may we come in?"

The formality that he used sent a cold fear through her. Something was wrong. She stepped aside and let them inside.

"Caroline, I think you should sit down."

"Caroline, It’s my sad duty to inform you," the room began to spin. Todd continued to speak. The glass she was holding shattered, as did her life.

Her baby, Zac, wouldn’t be coming home.

May 17, 2005 14:57 - A BSG oldie but goodie...

From Dog of Flanders came up again in my FeedDemon with the dreaded Battlestar comparison. While this was posted a while ago, in the wasteland which is Battlestar re-runs, it's something interesting to review. So here it is again.

1978: Robot companion for "Boxey" (Noah Hathaway).
2004: Flesh and blood companion for "Dr Baltar" (James Callis).

Advantage: the 2004 series !!!

1978: Identical combat scenes in every episode.
2004: Cylons appear every 33 minutes.

A draw.

1978: A Commander commands a capital ship and has a Colonel as XO.
2004: A Commander commands a capital ship and has a Colonel as XO.

What frack*n ships do they give a captain in the Colonial Navy? A draw.

1978: "Starbuck" (Dirk Benedict) is cute.
2004: "Starbuck" (Katee Sackhoff) is cute.

A draw.

1978: "Cmdr Adama" (Lorne Greene) best known for his role in "Bonanza".
2004: "Cmdr Adama" (Edward James Olmos) best known for his roles in "Blade Runner" and "Miami Vice".

One has experience with cattle rustlers, the other with replicants, pimps and traffickers. If we had a spare Battlestar, Edward James Olmos would be our choice of commander hands-down. Seriously, how many cows have you seen in space?

Advantage: the 2004 series.

1978: A kickass theme that makes you want to kick some Cylon or Eastern Alliance butt.
2004: Morose and depressing theme that makes you want to report to the nearest Cylon for extermination.

Advantage: the 1978 series.

May 18, 2005 08:49 - BSG From Down Under

From SMH Down Under comes this review by Michael Idato.

In the cutthroat world of cult fandom, applause for a remake, especially one as contentious as that of Battlestar Galactica, can be dangerous. This was the remake that had diehard fans up in arms. Starbuck a woman? Human Cylons? Lords of Kobol, preserve us, it was doomed from the start. Or was it?

As the first series has played out - tonight's episode is the season finale - this remake has steamrolled all opposition with taut writing, challenging themes and outstanding performances from all the leads. This was the remake we had to have.

The original Battlestar Galactica, lumbered with Glen A. Larson's Buck Rogers-esque view of outer space, was an unsuccessful execution of what promised to be a great idea. Cowboy characters got in the way of intriguing themes about the origin of man and the power of faith.

The remake taps into all of those, and beautifully. This final episode brings the Earth-bound human survivors to the mythical planet of Kobol, supposedly the wellspring of human life in the universe, while the rebellious Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) races back to the ruins of the planet Caprica to retrieve a museum artefact, the Arrow of Apollo, which, according to legend, will point the way to Earth.

Ron Moore's script dives into the heart of the show - man v God - and Australian director Michael Rymer crafts a vehicle for it that is engaging to the end.

May 18, 2005 09:28 - UK Season 2 begins in October

By way of the Battlestar Blog comes distressing news for the UK Battlestar Galactica fans..... But as the Battlestar-meister so aptly points out, they will be bit torrenting from us this time around. Maybe, in the third season, we'll all start together and save bandwidth!

Chris Howell over at The Great Link just passed an article link my way:

The US Sci Fi Channel will premiere the second season of Battlestar Galactica on 15 July 2005 and, unlike season one, they'll be screening it ahead of the UK.

"We will air season two of Battlestar Galactica in October, so the US goes first this time around," our Sky contact revealed earlier today.

May 20, 2005 17:22 - Dradis Entry: Perspective by Scotterkitty

Title: Perspectives
Author: Scooterkitty

Word Count: 100
Date: 5/17/05
Series: Season 1
Rating: K+
Category: Challenges, word: 'silly'
Pairing/Focus: Cally, Kara/Lee
Warnings: none
Summary: Just a little attitude from Cally
Spoilers: none
Archiving: BSG2003/ApolloStarbuckFic/Anyone else, please ask. www.bsg03fanfic.com

PERSPECTIVE

Cally glanced across the hangar bay at Starbuck and Apollo. They were arguing, again. The girl had never seen two people who were supposed to be such good friends argue so much.

She shook her head. What a waste of time. She could certainly think of more enjoyable things to do with Captain Apollo than argue. She wasn't sure what Starbuck's problem was.

But what do I know? Cally thought. I'm not a hotshot pilot who's too big for her britches and can't see what's right in front of her face. Nope, I'm just a silly, little girl... yeah right.

May 23, 2005 08:28 - WINNER: Dradis Contest - You Lied To Me by Haeng Bok

Title: You Lied To Me
Author: Haeng Bok

Word count: 100
Date Written: 5.20.05
Rating: K+
Series: Season one
Category: Dradis Challenge
Warnings: none
Archiving: BSG2003/ApolloStarbuckFic/Anyone else, please ask. www.bsg03fanfic.com
Summary: Contest word of the week: SILLY
Spoiler: Kobol's Last Gleaming, Pt. 2
Disclaimer: As usual, I am a humble, struggling writer. I own nothing, not even these characters.

Where you go, I go. I won't abandon you. The words had been silly, useless. Nothing William Adama did stopped the inexorable descent loneliness.

"You lied to me." The words were spoken twice.

Caroline whispered it the day Zak died. William hadn't kept him safe. One son dead; one son ripped apart and eventually gone. Kara screamed it through his comm channel, jumping to Caprica.

When it really mattered, his words meant nothing.

Now they were both gone, swept away by non-human, compassionless machines without a soul.

All he had left was pain; he'd carry it all the way to Earth.

May 26, 2005 11:39 - Confessions of an Occidental Chinaman - "Battlestar Galactica" S1 afterthoughts

Confessions of an Occidental Chinaman -
"Battlestar Galactica" S1 afterthoughts
Some disassembly required.

My favorites include:

  • Richard Hatch's Tom Zarek is Howard Dean. Totally and completely Howard Dean, right down to the voice. All "Colonial Day" needed was for Hatch go to zonkers before the VP election and start screaming, "And we're going to go to Kobol! then head to Earth! then return to Caprica, YEAAAAAAARGH!"
  • The most-improved character over the original, aside from Gaius, is Starbuck. Looking back on Dirk Benedict's performance as Starbuck in the original series and then his performance as Face on the "A-Team," it seems like Benedict was just playing himself. Katee Sackhoff, on the other hand, gives Starbuck a stronger voice and more likeable personality.
  • Although President Roslin's religious visions stuff came out of the blue, the intrigue surrounding her "female Moses" persona, plus her capacity to be tough, as she orders the "spacing" of the Cylon infilitrator, helps to make her a more interesting character than a "West Wing"-wannabe, which is what I feared at the end of the miniseries/pilot. There's another thing which keeps Roslin from being the show's resident bleeding heart, which is ...

There are also the plethora of useless speculation on Season 2 while we wait.

Title: Drunk and Disorderly
Author: Scooterkitty

Word count: 100
Date: 5/23/05

Rating: K+

DRUNK AND DISORDERLY

Kara stood before the civilian judge, her head pounding and her mouth as dry as the Scorpian deserts, while the bailiff read the list of charges.

"Disturbing the peace."

Oh yeah, she thought, stifling a grin.

"Drunk and Disorderly."

There's an understatement.

"Attempting to deface a public statue."

Hmm, I don't remember that...

"Attempting to steal a police vehicle."

Now, that I remember...

The judge looked at her sternly. "How do you plead, Cadet Thrace?"

The JAG officer, who was acting as her council, gave her a sharp poke.

"Guilty, Your Honor," Kara said, trying very hard to look contrite.
