March 13, 2005 17:03 - Galactica' Breaks Podcast Barrier

(Wednesday, March 09 08:28 AM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)

If you don't know what "podcasting" is, you're probably not the only one. On the other hand, if you don't know what podcasting is, you may not be a regular Sci Fi Channel viewer or a fan the cable network's hit new drama "Battlestar Galactica." Sci Fi is hoping that there's plenty of audience overlap when it partners with "Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore on the first original podcasting content ever offered by a major television network.

Want to know more about Podcasting?

Find out everything you need to know about Podcast Galactica here:
Podcast Galactica Info Here

It's divided into five segments

  • Moore has provided DVD-style audio commentaries to accompany the
season's final five episodes of "Galactica."
  • Currently available in MP3 format on Sci Fi's website
  • The audiocasts are meant to be watched in tandem with the episodes
  • This is leading up to the already-renewed drama's Friday, April 1 season finale.

Podcasting merges the basic principals of a radio broadcast with Apple's iPod, the market's most recognizable digital audio player. Users can download broadcasts in the MP3 format, transfer them to their MP3 players and then listen at their own convenience.

Podcasting is coming up fast!

The "Galactica" podcast and Moore's heavily visited Sci Fi blog are just a few of the ways that networks have are attempting to integrate the Internet and technological evolution into their regular programming plans. This Monday (March 7), for example, Showtime offered the premiere of the Kirstie Alley comedy "Fat Actress" as a free download, a strategy somewhat similar to The WB's use of AOL to stream the "Jack & Bobby" premiere this fall.

Already Sci Fi's most popular series, the second season of "Battlestar Galactica" will premiere in July.

About Battlestar Galactica

Produced by Universal Television and Glen A. Larson, the hit TV series, Battlestar Galactica, was first broadcast on ABC in September 1978. Starring Lorne Green, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict, this epic space saga went on to become a veritable sci-fi classic. With just thirty-six episodes created, Battlestar Galactica has enjoyed syndication over the last two decades, most recently on the Sci-Fi Channel.

With its compelling storyline, memorable characters and exciting visual effects, millions of fans tuned in every week to join Commander Adama, Apollo, Starbuck and the crew of the Galactica on their journey through the galaxy. Hunted by the diabolical Cylons, a mechanical race set out to destroy all humans, the crew of the Galactica and its ragtag fleet of survivors' only hope was to find legendary planet Earth-believed to be the home of the missing Thirteenth Colony of Man.

Inspired by the classic series, this extraordinary story was re-created in December of 2003 as a mini-series for a new generation of fans. The overwhelming success of the mini-series has led to the new Battlestar Galactica TV series, currently in its first season on the Sci Fi Network. The new series continues the integrity and spirit of the original series with and edgier approach and special effects that give viewers a heightened immersion of action, excitement, and suspense.

This fanfic is short and funny about what happens after dinner.......

Dinner had been beyond nightmarish. Social awkwardness was nothing when compared to intentional impropriety. For that reason, once they were left alone, none of them mentioned anything about it beyond their initial speculations. It would’ve been to strange.

Life, in its usual way, was being deplorably heavy handed with them. Little disasters were almost as bad as big ones, and the aftermaths were always the worst. In the aftermath of the current disaster, courtesy, discipline, and civility had forced the three into a situation that was intimately domestic in one of the most awkward ways possible.

March 14, 2005 23:52 - Ron Moore: On Battlestar Galactica Fan Fiction

Here's Ron Moore's view:

Ron Moore said this when asked about the fan fiction movement:

"As far as I'm concerned, fan fiction (that is, fiction written for fun, or non-professionally) should feel free to go in whatever direction it feels like going. If you want to write a story about Starbuck being Adama's illegitimate daughter and how she's carrying on an illicit affair with Laura following an accident which flings them across time and space to the Ponderosa Ranch, be my guest. It's certainly no further out there than the K/S stories in Trekdom which detailed the sexual and romantic liaisons between one James Kirk and one Mr. Spock."

"If you're inspired by this series and these characters and you want to turn that inspiration into artistic expression, I've proud and hope you enjoy the process. (And it should go without saying that there is a very bright and bold line between writing for fun and writing for profit and only the foolish would care to mess with NBC-Universal's legal department.)"

Visit the official Battlestar Galactica website over at SciFi.com. It's pretty cool.

March 17, 2005 07:12 - Chair Swiveling 101 - Ron Moore Chimes In...

March 12, 2005
Q & A: From the Official Ron Moore Battlestar Blog comes the following, very amusing Q&A.....

"Hello, Ron. I have a question about Baltar you ought to answer. One of the things I liked about the original series was the way Baltar did all his chair-swiveling. Boy, he sure looked evil way the frak up there on that big pedestal. And then Lucifer or some other Cylon would come in, and there would be those big, dramatic polytonal chords, and then Baltar would slowly swivel around in his chair to face whatever had come into his room because before they came into his room, he was facing a wall, or something off screen-- who knows what was there. I'm sure there's been a lot of speculation about it. But you see, when you made the new Baltar the way he is-- that is, a non-- chair-swiveller, I didn't think the show could work at all. You've got to have a chair-swiveller in it, and there hasn't been one-- until now. Just as I'm getting used to Callis NOT being a chair-swiveller, there he is at the end of "Tigh Me Up" SWIVELING IN HIS CHAIR! Well, I must say I was very pleased with that, and so now I must ask: Was James Callis's chair-swiveling scene a tribute to John Colicos's chair-swiveling?"

Chair-swiveling is an old and honorable avocation for any accomplished and self-respecting villainous personage. How could its inclusion be anything but a loving tribute?

This was pretty funny!

March 17, 2005 20:38 - What is the Dradis?

The Dradis is a tracking and identification system, somewhat similar to radar, used aboard colonial warships.

The Dradis console is the main information management console within CIC for the Galactica's? Dradis detection system. It is normally manned by Lietenant Gaeta in his role as the ship's Tactical Officer. Information from the console can be relayed to consoles throughout CIC, particularly the overhead information displays of the Coomander's Command & Control Center.

Term used to describe an object or objects detected by the dradis sensor system. Contacts are typically identified by cross-referencing with an IFF system (in the case of ships) or an astrological database (in the instance of planets or other celestial bodies).

IFF = Identification Friend or Foe

A transponder-based system of aircraft identification, used to distinguish friendly craft from enemy craft.

March 17, 2005 21:00 - What Does BSG-75 mean?

75th Battlestar Group

The Colonial Fleet unit that battlestar Galactica was assigned to at the time of the Cylon attack. It is often abbreviated (including on the Galactica's crest) as "BSG 75."

Battlestar Group is seen by RDM (Ronald D. Moore) as analagous to a modern-day Carrier Battle Group, comprising at least one battlestar, plus a number of support vessels. Given the number of available battlestars at the outbreak of hostilities with the Cylon attack, it is possible that a battlestar group may have comprised a number (3-4) battlestars operating as a single unit, supported by additional Colonial vessels.

Anyone notice this exchange, almost verbatim, in the latest Battlestar Galactica:

Someone's been watching "Patton"

Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery: Don't smirk Patton. I shan't kiss you.

Patton: Pity. 'cause I shaved very close this morning in preparation for getting smacked by you.

Except that it was between the acting colonial President, Laura Roslin and her arch-rival, Tom Zarek, the charismatic convicted terrorist. (Richard Hatch).

March 20, 2005 12:52 - Battlestar Galactica & Mormonism

Here's an interesting twist I found on the Internet:

Religion and television directly influence one another. This often is made obvious when television programs openly talk about or are based on religious themes. The same is true when religious figures decry the influence of television on American culture from the pulpit. However, sometimes this connection is not always so obvious. This is made clear by the influence of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (popularly known as the Mormon Church) on the 1970s science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica. The show was heavily based on similarities in plot with the Mormon Church and several of the church's doctrines were incorporated into the series.

March 20, 2005 13:03 - Battlestar Galactica - The Original Fans

Now, it's no secret that I am a Battlestar Galactica fan of the new series. What you may not know is that I was also a big fan of the original series (not Galactica 1980, just the original), so as I'm out surfing ocassionally I come across some interesting spots devoted to (rabid about) the original series. This is one such place. What makes this place interesting is that you can post a question to the original Starbuck, and he usually answers within 24 hours. You can also ask a question of Commander Adama or Sheba. Now do I think this is real? Nah, but it was a fun blast from the past, and if you can get by the Battlestar Remake bashing, the questions and answers are a bit amusing.

March 20, 2005 21:57 - Three Possible Outcomes To The Galactica Mysticism Angle

When looking at the Battlestar Galactica mysticism, three possibilities come to mind:
  1. It's real. Pythias made accurate prophecies, and some higher power is at work.
  2. It's entirely bogus, and the Cylons are using old prophecies to manipulate the humans. It's an awfully huge con, though, if that's the case
  3. The Waffle option: it's a fake which will turn out to be real or, at least, self-fulfilling, thus leaving us wondering if it's really real, you know, and, like, isn't that kewl, 'cause like, what if, like, you know, like, in real life, and it makes ya think, doesn't it?

This may not be news, but it is interesting to contemplate.

Galactica airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET, part of the channel's successful SCI FI Friday lineup, which also includes (http://www.scifi.com/stargate/) Stargate SG-1
and Stargate Atlantis. Galactica ends its first season with a finale episode on April 1.

March 21, 2005 19:59 - Sci-Fi channel BSG opening theme - anemic American version

From The New Battlestar Galactica group comes the following observation:

The European version of the opening Battlestar Galactica theme is reputed to be excellent, much better than it's American version. It has a haunting quality that makes you feel the loss of the colonies and pulls you in. Then it went into the drum beats accompanying the episode preview. Compared to the Sky One version, the Sci-Fi version of the theme sounds anemic.

Not having heard the Sky version, I am now on the Internet looking for it to download. Just thought I'd pass this on.

March 21, 2005 20:46 - Entertainment Weekly's Daily Guide

From Entertainment Weekly's daily guide to notable shows for Friday night comes the following:

Tonight's Best TV
Friday, March 25 - 8-11PM
By Alynda Wheat
Entertainment Weekly

STARGATE SG-1, STARGATE ATLANTIS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (Sci Fi) "SG-1" kicks off a night of cosmic catharsis with a sci-fi chestnut: the alternative timeline episode, where one screwup in the past wrecks the present (did no one see "Back to the Future"?!).

"Atlantis," meanwhile, enters "The Matrix" ("Revolutions," sadly) but with a less satisfying firefight and none of Keanu's comic genius.

And "Battlestar" gets it right: Mutinous standoffs, surprise assassinations and hot blondes brawling on a radioactive planet -- now that's how you end a season. -- Neil Drumming

March 22, 2005 20:23 - Put A Cylon On Your Desk!

Battlestar Galactica seems to be popping up in the strangest places and this entry is just plain funny.

iTech's virtual keyboard looks like a little Cylon head complete with little red light. Wonder who thought this one up.

iTech’s got the latest (Bluetooth) virtual keyboard
Posted Jan 20, 2005, 12:27 AM ET by Ryan Block
Very cylon-like!

We still remain vigilantly skeptical of the whole virtual keyboard thing (we know one day it will be a reality, keepin’ hope alive!), but iTech claims to have the hookup on one that even goes so far as to be a class 2 Bluetooth 1.1-enabled BTVKB. It probably works for crap, but we’re really just thinking of the oohs and ahs it’ll get when we pull it out that, and the way it looks like some small robo-drone sent to wipe us all out. (ie. a Cylon)

March 22, 2005 21:52 - Galactica's Cursing Is Frakked

From SciFi Letters To The Editor comes this bit of business. Very interesting opinion......

Simply put, the new Battlestar Galactica is a brilliant show.

They've taken what was a very cool and promising premise from the original show and fleshed it out in very compelling fashion. The day-to-day fight for survival, the complexity of the characters (most especially the Cylons), the dark and serious tone, the acting, the visuals, all are top shelf, and they make me actually look forward to Friday-night TV, like I did as a kid.

However, I have one major peeve with the show, one that annoys me greatly every time it happens, and that is their use of the word "frak."

Now I understand that the writers probably want to interject a hard-edged and serious tone in the dialogue, especially to maintain the edge that HBO-style series are able to have because of their looser censorship constraints, and they feel that dropping the "F-bomb" occasionally gives them the grit that they're looking for.

Obviously the SCI FI Channel isn't HBO or Showtime, where they can just drop the "F-bomb" at random without fear of censorship, so they have to come up with a more inventive approach, but honestly, "frak"?

March 23, 2005 11:47 - Book Exposes The Real Edward James Olmos

Author: Michael Hinman

Edward James Olmos seems very calm and collected as he portrays Cmdr. William Adama on Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," but few people know that Olmos in fact wanted to be a rock star.

Before he even thought about being an actor, Olmos was the singer and frontman for The Pacific Ocean. And now, one of his former bandmates chronicles those interesting times in a new book.

March 23, 2005 14:39 - Ron Moore: 'Enterprise' Changes Came Too Late

A slight aside from Ron Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame, about Trek, one of my other favorites....

Former Star Trek writer Ronald D. Moore recently revealed he liked the year-long Xindi story arc from Enterprise's third season, but said the new show format came two years too late.

"It's always difficult to reinvent yourself after a couple years on the air," Moore told TV Week for a long article on the state of the Trek franchise. "If you change pitch in mid-stride, it's going to be a problem."

Moore is currently heading the Sci-Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica remake, a dark and gritty take on the space opera genre. But Moore said Trek's optimism can still appeal to viewers. ""I don't think Trek needs to become Battlestar, but it does need to reflect and change and deal with what's out there. The first series gave you a hopeful view of the future by dealing with things like racism and the Vietnam War. You want to play to where the audience is today."

March 24, 2005 20:57 - Galactica Finale starts tomorrow!

From the site: Random Chatter comes this announcement for those Battlestar Galactica fans who've been living in a cave.

The two-part season finale for Battlestar Galactica starts tomorrow!

Even if you've missed one or two episodes so far, you don't want to miss these two. There are some huge things set into motion during this two-parter.

"Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part I" is on the Sci-Fi Channel tomorrow, and if you've missed any episodes so far, let me know and I'll get you the bit torrent.

The BSG guide here at RandomChatter is updated through last week's episode ("Colonial Day"). The entry for tomorrow night's episode will be posted when it airs, and the final episode's entry will air a week from tomorrow (was going to post it sooner, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone).

Random Chatter has an interesting Battlestar Galactica Episode Guide which is a work in progress and appears pretty interesting.

March 24, 2005 21:03 - TrekBBS BSG Tourney of Hotness: Finals!

Well, it's over and the results are in!

Over in the male division, its a blockbuster #1 vs #2 showdown as Apollo takes on Helo. Over in the female division, things were much closer. #1 Boomer barely escaped elimination at the hands of the scrappy Starbuck by a 16 to 15 count. Also a one-point margin separated Specialist Cally from the sensuous Number six, however, Cally had the upper hand in this bout, claiming the 17 - 16 upset. This sets up an intriguing #1 vs #3 matchup between Boomer and Cally.

March 25, 2005 20:16 - Tube notes - The Honolulu Advertiser

Must See Battlestar Galactica

By Mike Hughes,
Gannett News Service

According To The Honolulu Advertiser, "Battlestar Galactica," 8 p.m., Sci Fi Channel is the show to watch. It's a little better than most shows and tons better than the old "Battlestar." Now, with two episodes left this season, everyone has troubles.

Baltar keeps talking to his invisible friend, a gorgeous Cylon. He beds the visible Starbuck, wonderfully played by Katee Sackhoff, until the moment is spoiled.

Apollo, Starbuck's real love, has a macho face-off with his dad.

President Roslin faces her fatal illness. Boomer sensing that she's a Cylon faces suicidal agony.

Amid all that, pilots make a discovery that may or may not change everything.

Stay tuned because this leads into next week's cliffhanger.

Today we were surprised and excited to see that the first season of the new Battlestar Galatica is now out on DVD, but only here in the U.K.

It's one of our favourite shows (it's incredibly well done) and really the only current television we're interested in. So of course we went out and bought it!

Since we don't have television here, we missed the final 7 shows of the season. Now we can watch them on DVD. It seems odd that they are out here on DVD now but not in the U.S. Clueless marketing strikes again '-)

March 28, 2005 21:13 - Battlestar Galactica Comparison

Comparison between Old & New Battlestars

1978: Robot companion for "Boxey" (Noah Hathaway).
2004: Flesh and blood companion for "Dr Baltar" (James Callis).
Advantage: the 2004 series !!!

1978: Identical combat scenes in every episode.
2004: Cylons appear every 33 minutes.
A draw.

1978: A Commander commands a capital ship and has a Colonel as XO.
2004: A Commander commands a capital ship and has a Colonel as XO.
What frack*n ships do they give a captain in the Colonial Navy?
A draw.

1978: "Starbuck" (Dirk Benedict) is cute.
2004: "Starbuck" (Katee Sackhoff) is cute.
A draw.

1978: "Cmdr Adama" (Lorne Greene) best known for his role in "Bonanza".
2004: "Cmdr Adama" (Edward James Olmos) best known for his roles in "Blade Runner" and "Miami Vice".

One has experience with cattle rustlers, the other with replicants, pimps and traffickers. If we had a spare Battlestar, Edward James Olmos would be our choice of commander hands-down. Seriously, how many cows have you seen in space?

1978: A kickass theme that makes you want to kick some Cylon or Eastern Alliance butt.
2004: Morose and depressing theme that makes you want to report to the nearest Cylon for extermination.
Advantage: the 1978 series.

March 30, 2005 21:02 - From E! Online - BSG So Frackin' Cool

So Frackin' Cool!

Think Battlestar Galactica means cheesy effects, bad hair and robot dogs? Not anymore, bub. The new series, which wraps its first season on the Sci Fi Channel on Apr. 1, 10 p.m., has smart politics, hot sex and enough smokin' space-battle action to make you blurt out the cosmic curse word frack! This time, Lt. Starbuck's a kick-ass chick, original series star Richard Hatch plays a bad guy, and the evil Cylon cyborgs look just like people--often hot people!

The stone-sober Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos), the feller leading this ragtag fleet of human colonists back to Earth, must also deal with internal political squabbles like you wouldn't believe. In short, it's really good TV. And even better, the April Fool's Day finale will reel you in...just in time for season two in June.

March 30, 2005 22:36 - Battlestar Galactica: A season too sweet, too short

What amazes me so much about Battlestar Galactica is how much I'll miss the grim and gripping saga between the finale of a too-short 13-episode season Friday night and the start of a second season in July.

This from a die-hard Trekkie who likely won't shed a tear when Enterprise finally clunks its way off the interstellar stage later this spring.

Much to my surprise, the producers have continued to find amazing depth in the tale of 47,000-odd refugees fleeing the destruction their civilization by renegade androids. Where the cheesy 1970s series quickly resorted to plots about aliens, clones and gods, the new Galactica deftly drives the story along with tension, mystery and interpersonal conflict between richly-drawn characters.

The dramatic premise of the show -- that the Battlestar Galactica and a relative handful of Colonial spaceships have just escaped from the Cylons and are always on the verge of being discovered -- is tautly maintained from episode to episode. (I also found the original miniseries "fierce and entertaining."

March 31, 2005 22:21 - Finally, a good blast from the past

And the positive reviews and award nominations continue for Battlestar Galactica...... Can you believe that after only 1/2 year, this one show has made such an impact on everyone from diehard SciFi fans to mainstream media. From the Jeffersonville Evening News comes another review of the show!

Battlestar Galactica: Finally, a good blast from the past
By DAVE DAVIS - Tribune Associate Editor

I've become convinced that it's never a good idea to view the television programs you loved as a child again as an adult. The magic that made them special, I believe, very rarely travels in through time well.

For me, the list is a long one. "Battle of the Planets," "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," "Land of the Lost," "Speed Racer" (oh, Speed didn't hold up well at all) ... it goes on.
