June 2, 2005 09:10 - OT: Editor's Note: E-Price Trickery

This doesn't have to do with Battlestar Galactica except for the fact that most BSG fans are Internet saavy and do shop online. So, it's an important article to consider if you're surfing for products. -- Judy B.

Internet shoppers who want the best prices should delete cookies (in Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Delete Cookies) as often as possible. That's because the less online merchants know about you, the less likely they'll be able to figure out how much you're willing to pay.

According to a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania, most consumers don't know that online retailers will charge different prices to different people for the same product. Merchants call it "price customization." I call it "get it anyway you can."

See the story at:

http://update.internetweek.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hoLC0GMcfq0G4X0DRXQ0EH

Cookies are the tiny text files that retailers plant in people's browsers to track their online behavior and product preferences. With this information, merchants can determine whether shoppers are loyal to a brand or store, or whether they're bargain hunters. Retailers have a quaint name for the latter, "bottom feeders."

Bargain hunters could see higher prices than regular customers, or retailers may not offer discounts to people who regularly buy the same brand. These are only examples, and the combination of prices and who gets the lowest or highest are endless.

Anyway, I'm not against companies taking advantage of technology to boost revenues. Heck, it would be naive to expect businesses to do anything else. But I do have a problem with failing to disclose the information you gather and the reasons for gathering it.

I agree with the study's recommendation that retailers be required by law to disclose their data-gathering practices. Companies that don't have full disclosure, while continuing to take what they can from customers, are the real "bottom feeders."

June 2, 2005 14:15 - Production Update from SciFi

The SciFi channel's SciFiWire has updated with some new information regarding Season 2. From what they say, there's going to be some exciting stuff happening. Caution, there are Spoilers:

More Galactica Deaths Coming?
Will more characters die in the upcoming second season of SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica? That's what series creator and executive producer Ronald D. Moore told SCI FI Wire in an interview at EnigmaCon at the University of California, Los Angeles, on May 28.

"Yes, there are a couple of familiar faces that will go down for the count," Moore said cryptically, without identifying the doomed characters. He added: "I would say the events of the end of last season [mark] the beginning of this season."
Among other things, Moore said: "Adama's [Edward James Olmos] shot. There's people stranded on Kobol. Kara's [Katee Sackhoff] back on Caprica. Those storylines continue; all those continue. I would say we don't wrap up season one until episode seven. Adama is not back on his feet anytime soon. Commander Tigh [Michael Hogan] is in charge of Galactica. Laura [Roslyn, played by Mary McDonnell,] is in jail. There's a meteor crisis that follows the cliffhanger, and Tigh kind of steers them through that crisis successfully. But, you know, Tigh, he's probably the guy you don't want in charge."

Moore said that cast and crew are in the process of shooting the sixth episode of the second season in Vancouver, B.C. "We have scripts for the first 10 episodes," he added. "The 11th should be in this week, and we have the stories for the first 14."

Moore offered additional spoilers for the second season's arc. "Things begin to unravel when [Tigh's] in charge of the fleet. He declares martial law at a certain point. There is an incident where he sends the troops to get supplies, because the ships are withholding supplies from Galactica. He says enough is enough and sends out the troops, and an incident happens, and people get killed. They shoot a bunch of civilians. It's a whole nightmare, and Laura starts an insurrection and the fleet divides. There's a lot of fallout from the events of the last season." Battlestar Galactica returns July 15 and will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Our thanks to The CIC for this news!

June 6, 2005 15:53 - Daydreams Fan Fiction Awards Nominations Are Now Closed

Nominations are now closed. The final update will be posted on the current nominees page tonight soon. Partial update up now.

There were 798 nominations in total! The most nominations any stories got in a single category was eight. The most stories nominated in a single category was 57 (for Best Characterization). All categories received at least four different nominations and while I'd said the cut-off to keep the category was five, due to feedback I've decided to retain all of the categories for the voting.

The ballots to vote for the winners will be up Mid-June. Keep an eye on the site for more details.

June 7, 2005 10:54 - New Spoilery Tricia Helfer & James Callis Interview

Justine at the Tahmoh Penikett blog has this link to a funny interview with Tricia Helfer (Six) and James Callis (Baltar), which you can read over at Galactica Station.

It's for the official magazine of the sci fi channel. August 2005
Interview by Patrick lee
Transcribed by: Silentwolfdog At Ragnar Anchorage

There's an old actor's joke that no matter what a show is about, the actor always seems to think it's about him. Like the spear-carrier in Romeo and Juliet who says, "Well, there's this guy, and he's carrying a spear..."
That's just how James Callis, the sexily duplicitous Dr. Gaius Baltar on The SCI FI Channel's new Battlestar Galactica series, relates to SCI FI's hit series, which returns for a second season in July.
"It's in space," Callis says. "The world's ended... [But] it's not all a total disaster, because I'm running around, and Tricia's in my head. And that seriously seems to get a lot of viewers."

Tricia, as in Tricia Helfer, who plays the drop-dead sexy Cylon, Number Six. Partly a figment of Baltar's feverish paranoia, partly a bizarre connection that's been evolving from a game of control into something much, much deeper, Six steamed up TV screens with Baltar from their introduction in the original Galactica miniseries. And they've just kept at it with their perplexing interludes throughout season one. At the end of the season, Baltar and Six found themselves on Kobol, the ancestral home planet of human race, and their unholy coupling promised to produce...a holy child? A Clyon savior? The Antichrist?

June 12, 2005 19:24 - BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SEASON ONE SOUNDTRACK

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SEASON ONE SOUNDTRACK TO BE RELEASED BY LA-LA LAND RECORDS ON JUNE 21

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TOUTED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 SHOWS CURRENTLY ON TV BY TIME MAGAZINE AND TV GUIDE

(May 16, 2005- New York, NY) - Considered one of the top 10 shows currently on TV by Time Magazine and TV Guide, Battlestar Galactica is the #1 show on the Sci Fi Channel. On June 21, La-La Land Records will release the Battlestar Galactica: Season One soundtrack, featuring more than 78 minutes of the best musical moments from season one of this highly acclaimed new series.

Battlestar Galactica: Season One contains both the US and UK main title themes as well as music composed by Bear McCreary for the series, which TV Guide declared “a breakaway hit - poised to replace Star Trek as TV’s definitive sci-fi series. The CD packaging features exclusive liner notes from McCreary and the show’s executive producer David Eick.

Composer Bear McCreary is a classically trained composer with a degree in Composition and Recording Arts from the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music. He has composed score for over thirty independent films, including director Jon Chu’s musical short When the Kids Are Away and the Discovery Channel miniseries The 5 Coolest Things. McCreary was among a handful of select composers to have studied independently with the late film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven).

While some of the names may be the same, this is not your father’s Battlestar Galactica! Captain "Husker" Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Larua Roslin (Mary McDonnell) lead the Battlestar Galactica crew. They are trying to locate the fabled 13th Colony of humans, planet Earth, to join with their brethren against the Cylons which have taken over their homeland. The Cylons, which can look like humans and even be programmed to think they are, aren’t the only threat, as morale and the quantity of supplies are always an issue. In an interesting casting choice, Richard Hatch (who played Captain Apollo in the original series), is cast as villain Tom Zarek, a political prisoner who has spent the past 20 years in jail for his participation in the bombing of a government building.

"With its unique combination of intricate character arcs, dark ambience and gritty battle sequences, Battlestar Galactica afforded me countless opportunities for musical exploration,” said McCreary. “Fans will immediately recognize all their favorite musical moments from the first season, including the lush orchestral works featured in the dynamic two-part season finale. I am extremely proud of this collection and look forward to continuing this musical journey into the second season and beyond."

The second season of Battlestar Galactica will begin airing in July on the Sci Fi Channel. The Battlestar Galactica: Season One soundtrack will be available in stores or from www.lalalandrecords.com on June 21, 2005. The soundtrack from the Battlestar Galactica mini-series is also available from La-La Land Records.

Space: Above and Beyond - The rumors are over!
Posted by Gord Lacey
6/12/2005

You've heard the rumors that Space: Above and Beyond will be coming to DVD, and... well... it's not here. Good news though; it is coming, and it's coming very soon - this summer.

Space: Above and Beyond is a title that Best Buy will have an exclusive on for a period of time, much like Tru Calling: Season 2 (which has vanished from the BB website for an unknown reason), and some titles from other studios. After this exclusive period ends we'll see it at for sale at other retailers, so if you don't have a Best Buy in your area then don't panic, you'll get the set. Since this title is an exclusive, information may be difficult to obtain until it's announced for sale elsewhere, but we'll do some digging and report whatever we find.

We've been teased by rumors for years, but this is finally happening! This was one of my favorite scifi shows when it was on.

June 14, 2005 11:03 - Universal questions to ponder while waiting for Battlestar Galactica to premiere in 31 days….

What fans are doing while waiting for the premiere of Battlestar Galactica (Take 2)

Take a break from starring aimlessly out the window, re-running old episode clips, hunting for BSG spoilers and replaying that online trailer for the 40th time looking for just one more piece of enlightenment.

Ponder, for a moment, the universal questions we studiously ignore.

  • Can you cry under water?
  • How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
  • If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?
  • Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round?
  • Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. . but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?
  • Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?
  • Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
  • What disease did cured ham actually have?
  • How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?
  • Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?
  • If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?
  • If you drink Pepsi at work in the Coke factory, will they fire you?
  • Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?
  • Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
  • How come we choose from just two people for President and fifty for Miss America?
  • Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.
  • If a 911 operator has a heart attack, whom does he/she call?
  • Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet soup?
  • Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, "I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink whatever comes out!"
  • Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?
  • Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer?
  • When your photo is taken for your driver's license, why do they tell you to smile? If you are stopped by the police and asked for your license, are you going to be smiling?
  • Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?
  • If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?
  • Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!
  • Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
  • Why did you just try singing the two songs above?
  • Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride; he sticks his head out the window?

Okay, enough of that. Now back to reading BSG fan fiction.

June 14, 2005 12:42 - Mild Spoiler Alert - S2 Here. - Cmdr. Adama

Things that make you go hmmmm......

From U Gossip comes this small spoiler that's not really a spoiler at all.

Garcia and Edward James Olmos are being honored Friday at the Sabor Latino Epicurean Evening event, which raises funds for UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. The culinary extravaganza features dishes by five celebrated chefs from Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico and Uruguay, plus Latin jazz. Andy says he's "completely humbled" to be receiving, along with Olmos, the 2005 Gil Nickel Humanitarian Award for his charitable and community work. He notes that the evening "is really about raising awareness of all the work, the important research that's going on at the Jonsson Center at UCLA."

MEANWHILE: Olmos is in the midst of shooting the Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" series and will be rushing to fly down from production in Vancouver to make the Jonsson Cancer Center Epicurean Evening event. "If it's at all humanly possible, I will be there. We're taking it one hour at a time," he tells us. His Cmdr. William Adama character on "Battlestar" is in especially heavy scenes on the show that launches its second season in July. According to Olmos, having been shot and nearly dying twice, Adama has undergone a dramatic personality change.

Our thanks to the Battlestar Blog for this Olmos update:

Chicago Metromix has a little blurb posted from Edward James Olmos:

Edward James Olmos, star of "Battlestar Galactica," told me this week that the second season of the show is "better than the first one -- it's more complex." But he added a caveat: "I'd hate to be a person who saw Season 2 without having seen Season 1." Solution: Sci Fi's running a marathon of the first season of "Battlestar Galactica" from 7 a.m. July 6 to 1 a.m. July 7.

June 29, 2005 14:12 - OT: Stargate Atlantis Season Two Ep. Marathon in August

The SciFi Channel has published a preliminary schedule for August: Our thanks to morjana at theFans of Joe Flanigan group for this news.

http://www.scifi.com/schedulebot/index.php3

And on Tuesday, August 23, the SciFi Channel has scheduled a Stargate Atlantis Season Two Episode Marathon from 7pm - 1am. At that point in time, six episodes will have aired, so perhaps the marathon will air all six episodes back to back.

So logic would follow that if they're marathoning Stargate Atlantis Season 2, Battlestar Galactica Season 2 can't be that far behind.

This schedule is, of course, subject to change.

June 29, 2005 16:33 - BSG Blurbs from Burbank Con

Galactica Station has a lot of stuff from the latest blow-out Battlestar Galactica convention in Burbank. There's a wealth of tidbits and the spoilers abound. There's some really funny stuff in here including:

  • Katee and Jamie have something of a whose-is-bigger gun contest going on. If Apollo has two guns, Starbuck must have three. At one point they are together on the planet and Katee has on two guns, a la Lara Croft, the prop guys then hand a large machine gun to Jamie. Katee wants to know where her machine gun is, and eventually ends up taking Jamie's. Jamie's response was a sad, crestfallen, "well, shit."
  • There was a cast bet on who would call LL "Xena" first. It was Katee. In a scene where Kara is punching a heavy bag, Katee manages to knock the bag off its hook to the floor. She decides that's a very impressive feat and pumps her arms in the air in victory. Then she tells Lucy, "you think you're so tough, Xena?" Lucy then proceeds to ride the fallen punching bag like a bronco. I ... yeah.
  • *Every Friday the crew holds a lottery. Everybody puts in five bucks, they draw a winner at the end of the day. Yay. There's more to this story, because otherwise that's kind of dull.

READ THE FULL POST. It's really good!
