The original HAL 9000 film prop for sale by auction London 25th November
by Chris Randall
HAL 9000 original prop
It was in 1968 when a deranged killer took the lives of most of the crew of a spacecraft travelling to Jupiter. 10 years later, the killer was apprehended and asked to perform a final act of selflessness toward humanity.
That killer was called HAL 9000, the "artificial intelligence" computer in the 1968 film "2001 - A Space Odyssey.
In 1971, I discovered the original props from the motion picture which were languishing in a junk store in London and now, in 2010, echoing the sequel of the original movie, they will be sold at auction. This important collection of artefacts comprises the HAL 9000 faceplate and lens, the key to HAL's "Brian Room" and a handwritten note from Arthur C Clarke.
The auction, to be held on November 25th in London, will be at Christies, South Kensington.
